Technical Writing
Technical Writing is a growing field requiring remarkable discipline and attention to detail. Understanding the concepts of technical writing is necessary for ensuring consistency in copy, simplicity in practice, and professionalism in function and appearance.
The projects included in this section illustrate mastery of the following UALR Professional and Technical Writing Master of Arts program outcomes:
Attending to editorial detail and citation - These projects constitute a series of documents created and formatted using an in-house style guide. The guide itself was created, written, and edited by my partner, Chris Cook, and me during the Technical Editing course. Using The Chicago Manual of Style along with Federal Drug Administration guidelines and company preferences, we carefully constructed the style manual and implemented the established set of documentation rules, which I used to create the subsequent promotional materials. Each document underwent meticulous multi-pass editing by me as the subject matter expert and company content specialist.
Acting as professionals in and outside the classroom - In addition to tight deadlines issued by the course instructor, I worked diligently to meet deadlines within the company while creating these documents. While the style manual was created during the course of the semester, promotional documents were particularly time sensitive and often required a one-day turnaround. These projects required close communication with my academic team as well as my professional team, and constructive criticism of my work was consistent throughout the process. I worked in partnership with the Director of Marketing and the Senior Graphic Designer to produce material that was on brand, compelling, and technically consistent.
